SunCulture Tackling Global Illiteracy

About Powering Agriculture

Powering Agriculture: An Energy Grand Challenge for Development supports the development and deployment of clean energy innovations that increase agriculture productivity and stimulate low carbon economic growth in the agriculture sector of developing countries to help end extreme poverty and extreme hunger.

SunCulture, a 2015 Powering Agriculture Innovator, has been invited to participate in this year's Unreasonable Institute accelerator, Project Literacy Lab. This puts them in the unique position of being able to participate in the world’s first international partnership dedicated to closing the global literacy gap by 2030.

SunCulture was selected for this opportunity because over half of the farmers they work with engage in farming to increase their income and to better provide for their families. SunCulture’s farmers specifically mention paying school fees as their primary motivation for wanting to increase their income. Additionally, these farmers improve educational outcomes by growing nutritious fruits and vegetables, which help prevent chronic diseases and encourage healthy mental development. SunCulture has made tangible, appreciable progress in helping these farmers make a difference in the lives of their children and their communities.

On July 2, 2016, the Unreasonable Group, along with Pearson, the world's leading education company, opened the Project Literacy Lab by bringing SunCulture and 15 other high-growth ventures, headquartered across five continents, to their offices in Northern California. The two-week program will match participating innovators with resources, world-class mentors, and access to financing. The global network of support these companies will be plugged into will help them to scale their operations faster.

Project Literacy’s approach to closing the global literacy gap is centered on the idea that startups are an ideal way to get solutions to illiteracy into the hands of the people who need them. By connecting promising companies to investment, mentorship and opportunity, Project Literacy enables them to have a larger impact.

Project Literacy is a global movement convened by Pearson to make significant and sustainable advances in the fight against illiteracy so that all people—regardless of geography, language, race, class, or gender—have the opportunity to fulfill their potential through the power of words.
