About Powering Agriculture

Powering Agriculture: An Energy Grand Challenge for Development supports the development and deployment of clean energy innovations that increase agriculture productivity and stimulate low carbon economic growth in the agriculture sector of developing countries to help end extreme poverty and extreme hunger.

The PAEGC team conducted seven site visits in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Apr. 27–30, 2016. PAEGC interviewed the operators of milk collection centers, smallholder dairy farmers at the collection centers, and visited Promethean’s milk chiller factory.

Collection centers using the clean energy solution are operating under expanded hours, giving farmers more flexibility in milking times, allowing more farmers to reach the centers, and increasing the quantity of milk delivered. Farmers with access to collection centers using the milk chilling units have increased the quantity and quality of the milk they deliver to collection centers, resulting in increased income. Some farmers have used their additional earnings to purchase more cows.
