About Powering Agriculture

Powering Agriculture: An Energy Grand Challenge for Development supports the development and deployment of clean energy innovations that increase agriculture productivity and stimulate low carbon economic growth in the agriculture sector of developing countries to help end extreme poverty and extreme hunger.

PAEGC toured the pilot bamboo flooring production facility that uses the innovative modified process designed by African Bamboo. The process allows for a higher quality bamboo flooring product. PAEGC also visited the planned full-scale production facility that will utilize the bamboo waste from the production process in order to power the production facility. This will result in a 100 percent renewable energy process and an almost zero-waste facility. The team also visited several bamboo farms from which bamboo for the flooring will be sourced and met with farmers that are part of bamboo cooperatives started by African Bamboo. While African Bamboo is currently only buying a limited amount of bamboo from the farmers during their testing phase, when full-scale production is reached they anticipate that, with the regular purchase of bamboo from cooperatives, farmers' incomes will increase by approximately 30 percent (about US$232 per farmer per year).
