Sundanzer and Winrock International to Host Renewable Energy Cold Chain Workshop

About Powering Agriculture

Powering Agriculture: An Energy Grand Challenge for Development supports the development and deployment of clean energy innovations that increase agriculture productivity and stimulate low carbon economic growth in the agriculture sector of developing countries to help end extreme poverty and extreme hunger.

You are invited to please join Winrock International and SunDanzer Winrock International and SunDanzer to learn about the latest innovations in cold chain options using renewable energy.

This 2 day event will bring together stakeholders that can benefit from use of renewable energy power systems for cold chain, including both on-grid and off-grid solutions. A field visit will be conducted on the second day to pilot solar photovolotaic powered farm milk coolers (FMCs) that have been deployed with smallholder farmers in the Nakuru milkshed under the USAID Photovoltaics for Sustainable Milk for Africa through Refrigeration Technologies (PV-SMART) program with funding from the Powering Agriculture Energy Grand Challenge Initiative. The innovative FMCs are the first units ever to deployed anywhere and have been successfully operating for 2 years.

Forty percent of staple foods grown in sub-Saharan Africa never reach the market due to post harvest losses. In Kenya, mango processors operate at about 40% capacity; a major reason the mango supply is insufficient. Only forty percent of milk production is processed in Kenya. USAID and Winrock are raising awareness about point of production cold chain options available to smallholder farmers, vendors, and processors to reduce post-harvest food loss. Winrock is working with SunDanzer to introduce low-cost solar chillers to smallholder farmers in Kenya to reduce food waste and increase incomes.

  • Highlight point of production cold chain for smallholders in horticulture and dairy value chains
  • Share innovations in point of production cold chain technology
  • Develop strategies for dissemination and financing of solar cold chain solutions for East Africa
